Notability

[edit]

If this isn't cleaned up within a few weeks it ought to be deleted.

The only significant outstanding problem with this article seems to be that no other articles link to it. Ideally someone should address that. There are now a variety of inline citations spread through the article from three different reputable sources. The references listed also describe nationwide and worldwide attention for this event, including the U.S. Secretary of State publicly condemning it, so I consider its notability to be well established - I have removed the template questioning its notability. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Demiurge1000 (talkcontribs) 18:09, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Arguments for deletion above are based on a misapplication or misunderstanding of NOTNEWS which in intended to screen out articles on routine news reporting on things like announcements, sports, or celebrities. Politically-motivated bombings by militants who are part of a large, organized campaign of political violence are not routine news. A WP:CONS has evolved under which individual acts of political terrorism are considered WP:Notable.[1] This attack qualifies for Wikipedia under Wikipedia:Notability (events) because it received extensive international coverage.[2]. Finally, Wikipedia is not a paper encyclopedia. [3] "Wikipedia is not a paper encyclopedia, which means that there is no practical limit to the number of topics we can cover or the total amount of content. ... A rule of thumb for creating a Wikipedia article is ... the scope of reporting (national or global reporting is preferred). ... Events are ... very likely to be notable if they have widespread (national or international) impact and were very widely covered in diverse sources..."AMuseo (talk) 15:16, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
you should re-read WP:NOTNEWS - as it is clear, it says "Wikipedia considers the enduring notability of persons and events.". if an event does not have that then an encyclopaedia should not have a page on it. Codf1977 (talk) 15:22, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have read it carefully. It applies to routine events. Like a car that crashes and burns. Bombings that take place as part of a campaign of political terrorism are not "routine" and are WP:Notable.AMuseo (talk) 15:30, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article 2010 Newry car bombing has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Failes WP:NOTNEWS and WP:EVENT - no deaths, and no demonstrated historical significance. All news reports are from either the event or the day of the arrest. More Wikinews content.

Plenty of sources postdating the event by many months show continued interest in this attack, and place it in an historical context as one of a number of such attacks during the fading years of the IRA as a militant/terrorist organization.AMuseo (talk) 15:44, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that this deletion was proposed as a response to the use of this example in a series of deletion debates about terror incidents in the Middle East, Pakistan and Iraq. It was argued that such deletions were instances of Wikipedia:Systemic bias since articles on minor incidents that take place in the British Isles have articles that are not deleted. The 2010 Newry car bombing was given as an example of this bias. So, the deletionists came here to attempt to delete it. I maintain that the 2010 Newry car bombing is WP:Notable. I think the way to read into this is... does it read like a news report? If so then it fails NOTNEWS, I see no enduring notability of this event. I suspect there is a large attachment to these incidents because they are horrible and emotional events. However they are simply news and have no long term notability; I instead posit that these articles all deserved to be in a list article - that is a much more effective place. (btw please avoid referring to people as deletionist, it is strongly discouraged). --Errant [tmorton166] (chat!) 16:28, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
