I think consollidation of what is known so far would help to ease the work, especialy because what people learn from press isn't exactly neutral:
Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga has changed what we expect from a president, she is very popular among people and the dispute over who is going to be the next president started long ago, and whether the new president will be able to keep up with her work was also disputed far and wide. Some time ago Vīķe-Freiberga came up with idea that presidental election law is needed, to make the process more open to people. And then there is People's Party and the governing coalition who apparently don't give a damn about people. This provided quite putrid situation, when both candidates were accused for having dirty past (suprisingly still having perfect reputation the election law requires). Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga critisized both, especialy Endziņš. Endziņš in turn said that she has personal hatred against him and Harmony Center now says that they are going sue Vīķe-Freiberga for what she said. The public oppinion polls showed high support for Endziņš, though his reputation was ultimately ruined only on May 29, so there was little time for public to change oppinion (nevertheless ongoing polls on web and polls that begun after the fact, such as the one that TV broadcast Kas notiek Latvijā ? held on May 30 still showed high support). It has been disputed that Zatlers, who has no political expirience will act as puppet of People's Party. The Latvian branch of Transparency International "Delna" held a meeting at Saeima during the election to show support for Endziņš and People's Party got out their supporters to held a support meeting for Zatlers. There is a picture, circulating in Latvian media, of MP from People's Party showing rude gesture to crowd after Zatlers won, he was critisized for this and said that he was showing it to his friend in the crowd because they had a bet on who will win. And there is rumor that if Zatlers weren't elected judge Levits would have been nominated, which IMHO blurs entire thing up, because this election law suposedly was made to avoid situation that new candidates are nominate in the election day, and it wasn't clear who is nominated before elections - LSDSP said they are nominating Dainis Īvāns, but this idea got lost somewhere in the process. This was the first presidental election before which debate in Saeima was held, probaly also first election to draw such public attention and first to be held according to new election law, which probaly has caused some misunderstandings
Apparently part of all this is notable enough to mention it in the article. I hope I didn't left anything out ---- Xil/talk 14:16, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Against Column

[edit]

I don't see the point of an against column, it's pretty obvious that if your for choice A your against all other choices. Are am I missing something unique to Latvian elections? Jon 16:32, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't you see that nummbers don't match ? Apparently thare was an option to vote against both candidacies, atleast Karina Pētersone said she did so, and the nummbers don't mach so someone indeed has voted against both, which you wouldn't see if there was no against column ---- Xil/talk 19:05, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
