Rewording a reference....
[edit]Rewording a reference doesn't make it false. Nor does one have to use the exact title of the story in the reference notes. Just because the local news choses not to have some tact doesn't mean WE can't have some. --Hourick 11:26, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, Hourick, but neither you nor I own that reference and therefore we are not free to change its title. However, you are free to search for an equivalent source/reference with a title less offending to you. IMHO, what was done to that poor chap is quite more disgusting than a news headline. -- Túrelio 12:29, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- While I agree on what you say, perhaps a compromise can be reached. A simple reference to the website linking the article directly. There is no need to perpetuate something that was obviously humiliating even if the media market has no tact, but the article IS relevant. --Hourick 12:36, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
Just discovered it. Reference #4 talks about his jumping off a ship, but not in the appropriate spot, so the reference needs to be deleted and another reference already covers his death. --Hourick 12:45, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- Be careful, ref 4 is cited four times in the article! I still don't really see what's the problem with a ref title. I could easier understand someone to object the detailed description of the gruesome acts on David in our article. But such changes should be discussed between more users than you and me. -- Túrelio 12:54, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- I realize that. But I came up with a better reference.Besides, references from Newspaper websites are generally better at maintaining their links than TV organizations. --Hourick 12:59, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- A reference that is accessible only after registration like the one you added recently is not a good reference; actually such refs should be avoided if other are available.
Additionally, your claim He also never spoke about his experiences to his family is not backed by ref 9. -- Túrelio 13:37, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

@Hourick, please repair what you have done here [1] with ref 8
Houston Chronicle: Spring teen who survived pipe attack dies after leap from cruise ship, abc13.com, ..
The Chronicle has nothing to do with abc13. -- Túrelio 13:55, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
You guys could use the AP article on MSN (Updated: 9:51 p.m. ET July 2, 2007) and clean up a lot of those links to other sources. Survivor of brutal attack dies in leap from ship Ru1dt 14:52, 3 July 2007 (UTC)ru1dt
Redirect: David Ritcheson vs. 2006 texas assault incident
[edit]I think someone should consider the rerouting of the David Ritcheson article to this one. It seems backwards to define the kid by this incident, as opposed to making this a subtopic in the Ritcheson article. I don't have a problem with keeping this article, too, if that makes people happy. Automatically redirecting from person -> event seems like a weird precedent.
Right now, it's like redirecting Patty Hearst -> 1974 SLA kidnapping, and then saying "oh, yeah, and this chick named Patty Hearst was the one who got kidnapped." --Ru1dt 14:40, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- No, it isn't - Hearst was notable before her kidnapping. Ritcheson was NOT notable before the PVC pipe assault. WhisperToMe 22:40, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
The article when it first started out used to be on the Klein Collins article, but then moved here, so yeah it will be a little strange and messy atm, and after the death of David, it grown quite a bit--Taruru 17:40, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
As much as it pains for me to say this, the article should stand on it's own. Ritcheson's life was not notable aside from the assault, only briefly when he was involved in the hate crime legislation (which by the way is being pushed to be called, "David's law", but I can't find anything to cite the source) and his tragic suicide. It might be improved upon later, but it's doubtful more information would come out. He was very private after the assault and little will be known afterwards because of that. It's unfortunate that from here on, it's the case that will be kept track of and he will be noted about. --Hourick 17:48, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- Try this: Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, said she hopes to have the measure formally named "David's Bill" in Ritcheson's honor. from <ref>AP: [http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19569704/page/2/ ‘He just internalized his pain’], ''MSNBC'', July 3, 2007</ref> -- Túrelio 21:32, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
Rearranging paragraphs.....
[edit]I'd like to suggest about possibly putting some of the details from the assault section in the first paragraph. The way it's worded now just doesn't make much sense and I believe that it can be worded better. Other than that, I believe this article is almost finished. The only thing left to do is to wait for any new news about the two attackers.
American football.
[edit]I am gonna change this to football, if noone has any objections. If I read that he was on a high school football team in texas, it would be unlikely that my mind would go to Gaelic Football or Australian Rules Football. WookMuff (talk) 02:05, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
- We need to make the article understandable to other readers. We have Britons, Australians, etc. reading Wikipedia. Since "American football" universally refers to the game, we should use that instead of "football" which may refer to another game. WhisperToMe (talk) 23:20, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
