Fair use challenges
[edit]I noticed a whole range of photos were removed, some with inadequate, blanket reasons. I have reviewed them and restored some while leaving others out and actually deleting another that wasn't previously removed:
- Image:2006 Colorado football team media guide cover.JPG - RESTORED: a media guide is, obviously, created by universities to promote their team's season in the media. To be accurate: the represent the season they are produced for. The 2006 Media Guide cover is held out by the University of Colorado as a symbol of the 2006 season and would be sensible fair use for an article about said season.
- No, you must be discussing the book itself, at which point the cover is of unique significance. ed g2s • talk 00:10, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- Image:Brian_Daniels.jpg: - KEPT DELETED: the source on the image is too shady. It wasn't clearly promotional, despite the watermark. The player is certainly notable in the article (being held out as one of the key players in the upcoming season), but a better photo would be preferable. Maybe scanning one out of the media guide?
- Image:Ralphie the CU Buffalo at the Big12 Championship football game 2005.JPG (the buffalo) - REMOVED: Does not have any mention in the article. Ironically, this is one that should have been removed because it has no mention in the article, it is from last season, and it truly is mere "decoration".
- Image (team logos) - RESTORED: Each of these logos are intended to represent the individual schools; as noted under the {{Univ-logo}} license, they are to be used "to illustrate the college, university or other institution of higher learning in question". This usage appears to fall squarely into that limitation.
- No, these are unnecessary. Images must be used for critical commentary. On the teams' pages they are historically significant. They have no relevance to the text on this page, where they accompany text about a specific match. The name of team is perfectly adequate for identifying them, the logo adds nothing to what is actually being discussed. ed g2s • talk 00:10, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- They represent the team. Matthew Fenton (contribs) 00:14, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

I am willing to discuss further. For now I just don't understand why they were all removed --the Media Guide and logos seemed to fly past the normal understanding of college football. --Bobak 22:36, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- Your arguments is conclusive, your edit should remain. They qualify imo. Matthew Fenton (contribs) 00:08, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- The Ralphie image isn't Fair Use, it's free, taken and released by User:Johntex, so I restored it. Could we please stop editing the page and reverting the page until we come to a consenses (I need to learn to spell that someday)? It seems we have people divided and fairly strongly on each side of the fence. Could we call in a resolute or mediator to manage the situitation since we don't seem to be making any progress? I would prefer that this would all take place under the {{WikiProject College football}} space somewhere. I believe under the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football/Yearly team pages format discussion would be most appropriate. --MECU≈talk 00:42, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'd be happy to centralize the discussion. Currently, a small number over-zealous image removing users are appearing on several of my article watchlisted-articles. I've posted to several of the talk pages with some success so far. Johntex\talk 00:49, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
The centralised discussion is, as ever, at Wikipedia talk:Fair use. If you trawl the archives, you'll find this isn't the first time users have been upset about logos being removed and I doubt it will be the last, but you are fighting a pointless battle, because our policy is quite clear on this matter. ed g2s • talk 02:43, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- Please provide a pointed link to the specific discussion(s) relating this topic. Please stop editing pages in the meanwhile, and continue this discussion on the link provided above. Failure to do so will result in my belief that you do not wish to help resolve this issue and merely want to escalate the issue. --MECU≈talk 02:52, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Just off the top of my head, there was Talk:NHL Entry Draft. ed g2s • talk 02:56, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:RockyMountainShowdown.jpg
[edit]Image:RockyMountainShowdown.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
