[edit]Ok, I get your point about the percentages. My only question is is that a standard measure, by percentage, used by the NFL or Sports illustrated or records books or do they go by sheer wins? Roy Brumback 00:05, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
The official standings are by percentages. The official NFL tiebreakers refer over and over to 'won-lost-tied percentage' but never refer to wins alone. You can find them on NFL.com in the standings section. Also, I wasn't trying to be rude with my comment on the edit summary; That was just the only way I could get all the facts into the space I had. I was just trying to be helpful. Hope this helps too.
I didn't take it as rude, it's a valid mathematical analysis. And I know that the standings go by percentage, as during the season not all teams have played the same games because of the bye week. But does the NFL offically rank the '77 Broncos above the 2005 team because their were only 14 games then? Just wondering?--Roy Brumback 11:00, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
I don't think that the NFL officially ranks teams from one year against teams from other years at all, and I think that unofficially teams are usually ranked based on how far they got in the playoffs rather than regular season record. It seems to me that when determining which record is best, second best, and so forth, we should use the same procedure used for determining best record for teams that played together. Either way, you now have all the information I do and since you were the one who put this article together I'll let you make the decision as to how it stands. One option you might consider would be to make it second most wins instead of second best record. Another would be to find someone smarter than me who actually does know the proper procedure for comparing records of different eras (if such a thing exists) and asking them.
