Citation formatting
[edit]WP:CITEVAR may or may not say what's the best way to cite a reference, but I still think the standard (and much better) way is to use a citation template, which perhaps was not available 9 years ago when the page was started, but it certainly available now, and is fast becoming the main way to insert citations on Wikipedia. WP:CITET says, "Citation templates are used to format citations in a consistent way, as an alternative to formatting the citations by hand." Although it goes on to say "The use of citation templates is neither encouraged nor discouraged. Templates may be used or removed at the discretion of individual editors, subject to agreement with other editors on the article," it does not say that an ad-hoc citation style on a given page is set in stone for here on to eternity, but rather, it urges -- as is usual on Wikipedia -- to seek consensus. In that respect, WP:OWN is well worth reading. Turgidson (talk) 23:40, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- The cite book template has been around since 2006. This is nothing to do with WP:OWN – CITEVAR works like DATEVAR or ENGVAR – i.e. the original format should be retained unless there is consensus to change. Number 57 13:53, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
