European Championship

[edit]

"In the European Championship, only games of the first round between European teams are counted." - 18abruce, what does this mean? Does it mean that the first round games between European teams determine the European champion? If so, was this the case in 1989 only? Or multiple years? Is it still the case today? There's not one mention of this in the Ice Hockey World Championships article, why not? Lastly, there's no source. Please discuss. Meanwhile, I'm removing it until these questions are cleared up, because as it stands now, this sentence makes no sense. JimKaatFan (talk) 14:56, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It means that only the first round games between European games are used to establish the European championship. It was the case for the entire duration of the European Championships according to reliable sources. It is significant to 1989 because it affects the rankings I will source it and re-add the information. Obviously it is not the case today because the European Championship stopped being awarded in 1991, and is described on the appropriate page, being the European Championship.18abruce (talk) 21:30, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I think a small sourced note attached to the standings of the European Championships would be more appropriate to explain them as it has little importance to the tournament as a whole. Your thoughts @JimKaatFan:?18abruce (talk) 21:42, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And it is not noted in other championships when it actually affected the order of the medalists. It stopped being awarded because no one cared, perhaps it is best left off and readers can look at the European Championship page if they want to know more. I don't know if it even appears in more recent encyclopedias, the IIHF Media Guide and Record Book does not include it.18abruce (talk) 22:09, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I'll add a note by the standings of the European Championships, that makes more sense. I also added the background info to the main Ice Hockey European Championships article and I'll try to work in a link to that, to inform any confused readers. Before I read the Malolepszy book, I was really confused myself. JimKaatFan (talk) 23:34, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
