Jerry Kramer missing?

[edit]

According to a number of news articles ([1], [2], [3]) Jerry Kramer of Idaho was an All-American in 1957. Why isn't he listed here? --bender235 (talk) 01:04, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Presently, the 1957 list consists of the first-team selections by the major selectors -- AP, UP, Newspaper Enterprise Association, International News Service, American Football Coaches Association (for Look Magazine), Walter Camp Football Foundation, Football Writers Association of America, and Time magazine. Kramer was not a first-team selection on any of these lists. Time permitting, it would be great if someone could add the second and third-team selections, as has been done for other years. To answer your question on Jerry Kramer specifically, I checked a sampling of newspaper archives from 1957. The only honors I found reported for Kramer at the end of the 1957 college football season are as follows:
  • According to an article in the The Post-Register of Idaho Falls (dated 12/5/57), Kramer "received honorable mention on the Associated Press All-America team." The AP in those days recognized first-team, second-team and third-team All-America teams and then named others who did not make those cuts but were deemed worthy of an "honorable mention." Many people would only consider first-team selections to be true All-Americans. Others might extend it to second or third-team selections, but I'm not aware of anyone counting an AP "honorable mention" designation as an actual "All-American" selection.
  • According to a syndicated feature story on Kramer that appeared in several newspapers on 12/26/57, Kramer was "the only Idaho player ever selected to play in the North-South Senior Bowl Game." However, that is not the same as an All-American selection.
  • According to another article in The Post-Register of Idaho Falls (dated 12/6/57), Kramer was "named on the Pacific Coast Conference coaches' first team." That's a regional honor rather than a national All-American honor.
In sum, I found no listing of Kramer as an All-American (first, second or third team) in any of the press accounts of the time. It is fairly common for subsequents accounts of player to refer to them in a loose or exaggerated fashion as an "All-American." That appears to be the case with the articles you cited above. If you can find a record of an actual All-American selector listing Kramer as an All-American, by all means feel free to add it. I looked and could not find any. I was unable to find any primary source either. Only those recent newspaper articles. But they're making such a big deal out of it at Idaho, I can't believe he actually wasn't an All-American. --bender235 (talk) 12:18, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
