Convoluted history

[edit]

The WW II summary only alludes to "the large number of enemy aircraft destroyed in the air and on the ground." A curious phrase since it's easily found that the 339th FG was credited with 235 e/a in air combat and 440 "grounders," the latter third highest in the 8th AF. Among others, check Roger Freeman's "The Mighty Eighth."

The postwar text says "the wartime 339th Bombardment Group" was redesignated the 107th Fighter Group, with no previous BG reference. The text does not state that the 339th originally bore the Bombardment designator but subsequently became a fighter group in 1943 and a pure fighter group in May 1944. See "Air Force Combat Units of World War II."

Appropriate changes made in the text.
