Merger and retitling proposal

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was not to merge as no clear consensus and no discussion since July 2015. Eagleash (talk) 00:10, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I propose that Škoda Garde be merged into this page. It's basically about the same car, before it got facelifted, upgraded and renamed in 1984. The Škoda Garde page currently is a meagre stub and has been for years; both pages would benefit from a general technical description (the fact that they are rear engined is not even mentioned!). To reflect the merger this page could then be moved, perhaps to Škoda 743 (after the common model code of the two cars) following the example of the equivalent Czech Wikipedia page. – Cloverleaf II (talk) 15:50, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer having separate articles for Garde and Rapid. I admit that the models are very similar but the difference is more than just a facelift. Also the very similar 1000 MB and 100/110 have their own articles, so why not Garde and Rapid? 743 is a factory model code which is not widely known as it was not used in marketing and therefore it is better to avoid using such. --Gwafton (talk) 09:59, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The Rapid was only a facelift of the Garde so happy for it be merged if there is consensus. Even the Skoda Auto website has one page for them both! I'd avoid using the Skoda 743 for a page name. The code name for the Rapid is apparently Type 747 (at least the 136 Rapid) Skoda Auto Vintage. Warren (talk) 15:30, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Rapid is not just a facelift. Look at the measurements (front and rear track), engine and gearbox. --Gwafton (talk) 20:43, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I now, the reasons for merge looks pretty nice on paper for me. However there is big obstacle in the form of wp:RECOGNIZABLE, types of Škoda like 743 or 747 are absolutely unrecognizable and unknown to people. It is totally unexpected naming and description. Unlike in the west, the "facelift" procedure in communism times was not known to take a place, or advertised in any means .. so for the people on the market the Rapid and the Garde were seen as completely distinct cars. What the facelift is we have learned only with new models arriving later. I am against the merge - it would not make sense in this setting. Reo + 13:35, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Merger

[edit]

"Rapid" was used on the 1981 design, in the UK market for instance. The 1984 facelift is just a facelift; the name only changed in the few markets where the original car was called Garde, so there is no need to use some cryptic internal code for the article title. Garde was never more than a stub; not much content possible. If it was up to me, the Rapid/Garde would be merged into Škoda Type 742, but I think there is a lot of resistance to that so no worries.  Mr.choppers | ✎  03:06, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
