Syed Shahid Mahdi is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and former Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia.[1] He has made significant contributions to both academia and public administration.[2][3][4]

Education

He is an academic and civil servant, holds a Master of Arts in history with Political Science from Aligarh Muslim University, where he graduated with First Class First honors and consistently in all his academic pursuits.[5][6]

Career

He began his career in teaching, serving at Aligarh Muslim University and Kurukshetra University from 1959 to 1963.[7] In 1963, he joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), ranking second in his batch. He served the Government of Bihar in multiple key roles, including Deputy Development Commissioner, Director of Fisheries, managing director of both the State Cooperative Bank and the State Cooperative Marketing Union, and Resident Commissioner in New Delhi.[8] In the Central Ministry of Agriculture, he held the position of Fertilizer Commissioner.[9]

In his subsequent roles, he served as the FAO Representative in Nepal from 1988 to 1993 and in Yemen from 1993 to 2000, where he significantly increased FAO's technical assistance programs. During this period, he also acted as Resident Coordinator for all UN development agencies in both countries. His tenure included a critical year in Ethiopia, where he helped mobilize emergency project funds during a drought crisis. He reached the senior-most D-2 professional grade in the UN, demonstrating his extensive expertise in rural development and agriculture.[10][11]

After his time with the FAO, Mahdi served as Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia from March 2000 to June 2004. His recent activities include chairing the Delhi Education Society and Dr. Zakir Husain Memorial Welfare Society, along with serving on various educational councils, such as NIEPA, Ed.CIL, and the Maulana Azad Education Foundation. He has been actively involved with institutions like IGNOU and Maulana Azad National Urdu University.[12]

Mahdi's travels reflect his engagement in international diplomacy and cultural exchange. He has visited countries worldwide,[13] including the US, Europe, and Asia. Notably, he participated in the Government of India's cultural exchange programs in Germany, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Iran between 2001 and 2002. He was part of a parliamentary delegation to Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Bahrain in response to the terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament. In 2000, he visited China with a high-level Indian delegation led by the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, further solidifying his role in fostering international relations and educational collaborations.[14][15][16]
