Surau Al Firdaus is a surau (Muslim prayer area) located Kampong Lorong Buangkok, the last surviving village in Singapore. It was built in 1967 and actively functions as a small mosque and Islamic center.

History

[edit]

The surau was established in the 1960s by the residents of Kampong Lorong Buangkok.[1][2] According to the current caretaker of the surau, the place was built in 1967, with help from donations.[2] The surau was intended as a place of prayer for the Malay Muslim families living in the village.[1][2] It was reconstructed in 1999 to accommodate more worshippers.[1]

Currently, the surau is still active and functions as a local mosque.[1][2][3] It is not only used by the residents of the village but also by people from the city.[1][2][3] The surau also hosts Islamic classes and related activities.[1][3]

Construction

[edit]

The present surau is a wooden structure with a zinc roof, as is the case with other houses in the village.[4][5] A metal pole attached to the roof bears a crescent and star symbol.[4] The construction of the surau is generally described as being in the style of the architecture of Malaysia.[5]
