Stoller Middle School (SMS) is a public middle school in Beaverton, Oregon educating grades 6-8. It is one of the newest middle schools in the Beaverton School District. It is one of the largest middle schools in the state of Oregon.

History

[edit]

Stoller Middle School was constructed on a 120,000 square foot lot in 1997, on the site of the abandoned Stoller family farm that BSD purchased. The Wismer farm just north of the school was also abandoned and Jacob Wismer Elementary was constructed on the plot in 2001.[3] The combined property also contains a small park with a lake.

In 2015, a student won the national history spelling bee and went on to compete in the international spelling bee.[4]

In the 2018-2019 school year, the student enrollment reached a peak of 1,594, making it the largest traditional middle school in the state of Oregon.[5] This obviously made the school extremely overcrowded and the number went down to around 900 after the opening of the nearby Tumwater Middle School in 2021.[6] SMS is now the eighth biggest traditional middle school in Oregon.

On November 30, 2018, a threat against SMS was e-mailed to the administration at BSD. The school was under lockdown for several hours until police officers searched the school and ruled the threat as a hoax.[7] The following Monday, security measures were put in place and over 200 students were kept at home.[8]
