Stalachtis is a genus of metalmark butterflies (family Riodinidae). It is currently the only member of the tribe Stalachtini,[1] but many metalmark butterflies are yet to be unequivocally assigned to tribes, so this might change eventually.

Characteristics of Stalachtis Butterflies

[edit]
  • They are small to medium-sized butterflies.
  • Their wings are often brightly colored with metallic markings that help with camouflage and mimicry.
  • Many species in this genus exhibit mimicry of toxic or unpalatable butterflies, helping them avoid predators.

Notable Species

[edit]

Some known species within the Stalachtis genus include:

  • Stalachtis calliope
  • Stalachtis phlegia
  • Stalachtis euterpe

Habitat and Distribution

[edit]
  • These butterflies are typically found in tropical rainforests and lowland forests across Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and other parts of South America.
  • They prefer warm and humid environments, often seen near forest edges or clearings.

They are essentially limited to the Amazon biome and the surrounding regions. They are part of complex mimicry rings with Ithomeis, Heliconius and Ithomiinae.
