Park Seong-hwa (Korean: 박성화; born 3 April 1998), known mononymously as Seonghwa, is a South Korean singer, rapper, dancer, songwriter and actor. He rose to fame as a member of the Korean boy group Ateez in 2018 under KQ Entertainment.[1] He made his first acting appearance in the series Imitation in 2021.[2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Park Seong-hwa was born on 3 April 1998 in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, later moving to the nearby city of Jinju with his family at the age of ten.[3] His name can be translated into English as ‘to be a star’ (성: star, 화: to become).[3][4] His family consists of his mother, father and older brother.

Seonghwa attended Myungshin High School, an all-boys high school in Jinju.[5][6] At this time, he joined his high school dance team ‘Dilettante’, later becoming the club president.[3] According to Seonghwa, it was his performance of Exo’s ‘Call Me Baby’ with his dance team which convinced his mother to support him in seriously pursuing his dream of becoming an idol.[7]

Seonghwa initially attended Baekje Arts University in the Department of Practical Dance, though he did not complete this course.[5][6] He later enrolled at the Global Cyber University in the Department of Broadcasting and Entertainment.[5][8]

Career

[edit]

2017-18: Pre-debut

[edit]

In 2017, upon auditioning for various entertainment companies and moving to Seoul, Seonghwa joined KQ Entertainment as a trainee. He initially auditioned as a rapper but trained as a vocalist instead.[3] Under KQ, he became a member of pre-debut group ‘KQ Fellaz’, which would later become Ateez.[9]

In the same year, he auditioned for JTBC’s survival programme Mix Nine alongside other KQ trainees, though he did not pass the auditions stage.[10]

On 18 May 2018, Seonghwa made his first official pre-debut appearance with KQ Fellaz in a dance cover of ‘Pick It Up’ by Famous Dex, which was posted to KQ Entertainment’s official YouTube channel.[11]

2018-Present: ATEEZ

[edit]

Seonghwa made his official debut as a vocalist for eight-member group Ateez on 24 October 2018 with the release of the group’s first EP Treasure EP.1: All to Zero, alongside music videos for songs ‘Pirate King’ and ‘Treasure’.[12][13] He is the eldest in the group.[14] With Ateez, he has released two Korean full studio albums, Treasure EP.FIN: All to Action (2019) and The World EP.FIN: Will (2023).[15]

In 2023, as part of Ateez’s second studio album The World EP.Fin: Will, Seonghwa participated in the subunit track ‘MATZ’ alongside fellow group member Hongjoong.[15][16] To date, Seonghwa has participated in the writing of two Ateez songs - ‘From’ and ‘MATZ’ - according to KOMCA.[17] He has cited DRP Ian, Exo’s Kai and Shinee’s Taemin as some of his musical influences.[18][19][20]

Acting

[edit]

In May 2021, Seonghwa made his acting debut in a supporting role in the KBS2 television drama Imitation, alongside fellow Ateez members Yunho, Jongho and San.[2] He played the role of Nam Se-young, the leader of the idol group Sparkling, appearing in ten episodes.[21] The series aired from 7 May to 23 July 2021.[22]

Seonghwa has spoken positively of his involvement in this project, stating that it felt “strange and like a dream”.[23][24]

Music

[edit]

Seonghwa participated in several songs on Imitation’s original soundtrack, including Sparkling’s ‘Diamond’ (with Ateez’s Yunho and San and Boys’ Republic’s Suwoong) as well as ‘Your Sign’.[25]

He has released several solo covers via the group’s official YouTube channel, including ‘Angel Baby’ by Troye Sivan and ‘At My Worst’ by Pink Sweat$.[26][27]

Other ventures

[edit]

Fashion

[edit]

Seonghwa has often expressed an interest in fashion, describing his style as ‘sleek’ and ‘genderless’, as well as expressing an interest in wearing both men’s and women’s clothing.[28][29][30] In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he listed Kim Bekker, Isabel Marant and Anthony Vaccarello as his style inspirations.[28]

On 28 March 2024, he appeared on his first Japanese solo cover for the magazine Gianna Boyfriend.[31] On 29 September 2024, Seonghwa attended the Isabel Marant Womenswear Spring Summer 2025 show during Paris Fashion Week, marking his Paris Fashion Week debut.[13][32]

Personal life

[edit]

In October 2023, while ATEEZ were promoting in the US ahead of their performance at KBS’s Immortal Songs Live Concert at the Prudential Centre in New Jersey, Seonghwa took a temporary break from official schedules after the death of his grandmother.[33] In July 2024, while on the US leg of Ateez’s Towards the Light: Will to Power world tour, KQ Entertainment announced the death of Seonghwa’s grandfather.[34]
