Sattler is an unincorporated community in Comal County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 30 in 2000. It is located within the Greater San Antonio area.

History[edit]

A Walhalla Singing Club was founded in Sattler in 1877, so Sattler has also been referred to as Mountain Valley and Walhalla. When the post office first opened at William Sattler's house in 1856, it was named in his honor. In 1846, Sattler made his home in Comal Town, and in 1853, he moved to Mountain Valley. Eventually, the post office was relocated to a general store, which served as the local farmers' and ranchers' commercial and social hub. Once Hidden Valley was inhabited in 1863, it was a part of the Sattler community. Over 1,000 acres (400 ha) of agriculture were situated in the valley on the western side of a Guadalupe River bend. It was estimated that Sattler was home to 25 people until just after World War II. According to records, it had all but disappeared by the 1950s; the completion of the neighboring Canyon Dam and the flooding of the valley above Sattler coincided with its rebirth in the mid-1960s. After that, Sattler catered to locals and visitors to Canyon Lake. In 1990, its population was estimated to be 30. In 2000, the population did not change.[2]

On October 26, 2023, an F0 tornado struck Sattler. The weak tornado damaged some trees and fences.[3]
