Santos Iñurrieta de la Fuente (July 8, 1950 – December 10, 2023)[1] was a Spanish painter known for his contributions to the Basque art scene and his focus on social and political themes. He was a significant figure in Basque contemporary art, especially during the 20th and 21st centuries.[2][3]

Early life and education

[edit]

Iñurrieta was born in Vitoria, Spain, in 1950. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts of Vitoria from 1964 to 1967.[4] At the end of the 60´s and early 70´s he actively participated , together with other artists, in the group Klink, which was involved in anti-franquist militancy, providing a colective open space , anarchic and fertile. He was very involved in the development of the cultural network in his hometown. He supported many other artists, musicians, actors ,movie directors in his studio, which grew into an anti-establishment, interdisciplinary breeding ground .

Artistic career

[edit]

Iñurrieta started his artistic career with a focus on volumetric abstraction, using geometric forms and anthropomorphic elements. By the late 1970s, he was part of the influential Basque art exhibition "Erakusketa," which helped introduce Basque art to a broader Spanish audience.[5]

Around the late1980s, after spending a year on the island of Lanzarote, his style shifted to a more figurative approach, incorporating surrealism and symbolism. Narrative painting gained ground to a very argumentative, ironic work. Definitely a sharp criticism to very many aspects of contemporary society, highlighted by long, extravagant titles that were like a subgenre within every painting.[6]

Along his artistic life he had many exhibitions, especially in the Basque Country, but also in Belgium,Paris and Mallorca .Iñurrieta is considered one of the most prominent artists in the Basque Country.

His last exhibitions were in the Museum of Contemporary Art Artium , in Vitoria[7][8][9][1].Other exhibitions , in the year 2018 were at Zas and Zuloa Irudia[10]

After his death in 2023 he received two homages in his hometown, a cultural gathering in two centres, where artists presented works dedicated exclusively to the figure of Santos Iñurrieta.

Album covers and posters for events such as the Vitoria International Jazz Festival are also among his works, always implied in the cultural tissue .[11]

Life in Mallorca

[edit]

In 1992, Iñurrieta moved to Mallorca, where his work took on a new direction influenced by the island’s atmosphere. His paintings are characterized by vibrant colors and elaborate imagery. His work becomes more argumentative, ironic, surreal, symbolist and scathing, a sharp criticism to modern society, with a deep load of irony highlighted by the extravagant and descriptive titols of his paintings.

There are constant references to the world of art, these are a tribute to his most admired artists (Matisse, Picasso, Gris, Hockney, among others), not acts of plagiarism. He wishes to paint in total freedom and this means visiting the icons of modern painting.

He remained active in the art scene, exhibiting his work both in Spain and internationally until his death in 2023.[12]

Legacy

[edit]

Iñurrieta’s work is included in several prominent art collections and museums, such as the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, and the Álava Provincial Museum in Vitoria.[13]
