Rockland is a bilingual (mostly francophone) community located about 25 kilometers east of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, part of the city of Clarence-Rockland. Rockland has a population of 9,210.[1]
History
In 1868 a sawmill was built here by William Cameron Edwards on the Ottawa River, followed by a link to the Grand Trunk Railway in 1888. Edwards, who held timber rights in the area and was also the first postmaster, named the area for the rocky nature of its landscape.
Commercial expansion
Recently, massive construction projects have been underway with the addition of TSC, Staples, Wal-Mart Supercenter, Boston Pizza, Broadways and various small stores. The addition of Starbucks and Dollarama are planned in the 2009. In 2008, talk of an IKEA has been underway. IKEA Rockland would serve hundreds of thousands of people east of Ottawa and some parts of Quebec.
