R. Sivachandran

R. Sivachandran began his teaching career as a lecturer in Geography at the University of Peradeniya and the University of Kelaniya.[1]

In 1980, he joined the University of Jaffna as a Senior Lecturer, where he made significant contributions to the academic community over the next several decades.

In 1998, he was promoted to Professor of Geography at the University of Jaffna. During his tenure, he held various key positions, including:

  • Head of the Department of Geography
  • Acting Head of the Department of Sociology
  • Coordinator of Extra-mural Studies[2]
  • Dean of the Faculty of Arts[1](2004–2007)

Prof. Sivachandran was instrumental in founding the **Media Resource and Training Centre** at the University of Jaffna, which aimed to enhance media education and resources within the region.[1]

Contributions to Academia

Throughout his career, Prof. Sivachandran held multiple editorial and advisory roles, including:

  • Editor of Chinthanai (Journal of the Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna) in 1996
  • Editorial Advisor to Markam (Journal of the Marga Institute, Colombo) in 1992
  • Consultant for Jaffna Geographer (Journal of the Geographical Society, University of Jaffna, Vol. 5)[3]

Professional Affiliations and Honorary Roles

Prof. Sivachandran has held various honorary and leadership positions throughout his career, including:

  • President of the University Teachers’ Association[4] (1998–2000)
  • Senior Member of the Sri Lanka Red Cross (SLRC)
  • Zonal Chairman of the Lions Club of Jaffna (2009)
  • Consultant, Jaffna Environmental Protection Society, Irrigation Department, Kachcheri, Jaffna[2]

Advisory Role

Prof. Sivachandran is also an Advisory Member of the Noolaham Foundation.[2]

Personal Life

Prof. Sivachandran lives in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, where he continues to contribute to educational and social initiatives.[2]
