Adding DYKs
[edit]The instructions say "When adding a new DYK here, add to the top of the relevant section, with the most recent one first." Either I'm being stupid or this needs clarifying: I've just added one of mine, from July 2010, to the top. But it isn't "the most recent one". Should I have inserted it further down? If so, the instructions should say something like "Add to the relevant section in the correct chronological place". (I think I have an even older one to add, if I can find it in my Talk archives.) --GuillaumeTell 12:02, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- I guess the instructions were written thinking that an addition will automatically be "the most recent one". But we keep finding older ones, so I think these should go "further done" in chronological order. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:52, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
I added the instructions and see how they could be confusing. The chronological order in which they became DYKs doesn't really matter. What I meant was to add each new DYK you find to the top of each section so that they don't get mixed up with the green-checked ones which have already been added to the portal rotation. - But I would think that within the group "not yet green" they should be chronological? Although it doesn't really matter as long as they are accompanied by the link to the date in the archive. I would not have added in between the green ones, because their date is not apparent. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:07, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- Well, you can put the "new" ones in chronological order if you want, but it's a bit of a waste of time. The 3 selected for each rotation page aren't based on their date. They're chosen to get a mix of periods, operas, bios etc. as well as the availability of a free-use illustration. Once a DYK has been included in the rotation and green-checked, it should be moved below the new ones. Voceditenore (talk) 14:13, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarifications, and the improvement to the instructions. I'll have a glance through my archives and see if I can find some others. Does the Portal work its way through the unticked DYKs on its own or do you manually feed new DYKs to it from time to time? Hmm, looking again at the above, it does look like a manual job. --GuillaumeTell 17:28, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- Each new page of 3 is created manually. Then once it's transcluded at Portal:Opera/DYK and the max number for that component in the portal is updated, the randomization is automatic. Voceditenore (talk) 18:06, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
