27 and 28

[edit]

The blurbs for these are both from the text of ledes of WP:FLs - as this is featured-level quality content for information about these individuals related to the topic of film, this is appropriate for inclusion. Cirt (talk) 21:34, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am unsure what you are asking for... Is it comments about appropriateness? FWiW Bzuk (talk) 21:43, 12 April 2009 (UTC).[reply]
Oh sorry, my comment was in response to this [1]. Cirt (talk) 01:34, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The argument is that they are not biographical in nature, and I have to agree. Is there not another place on the portal for the filmography articles to be listed? —Erik (talkcontrib) 14:27, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The ledes of the articles do have a majority of biographical information, however. Cirt (talk) 14:35, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You have a point. Maybe see if it's appropriate to add {{WPBiography}} to this kind of article? If it is, that would solidify the case for including the filmography articles in this particular classification. If not... no other place to put it? —Erik (talkcontrib) 14:54, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. Cirt (talk) 15:07, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding [2] and [3] by Shshshsh (talk · contribs), please see above, thanks. Cirt (talk) 12:41, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

These articles are not biographies, they are filmography lists. If you wanna create a film-related section for lists, it's your decision. But it doesn't mean you can place these lists to stand on par with elaborated biography articles about living persons, which people had worked very hard on. People who go through the names expect to see biographies, not filmographies. We'll start an RfC if we need to. ShahidTalk2me 12:48, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As mentioned above, (at least in these two so far, 27 and 28) in the ledes of these two lists the majority of the info is biographical. And that is what is used as the blurb text for 27 and 28. Cirt (talk) 12:51, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter. This section is for featured biographies. If you wanna add them so why wouldn't you write "Filmography of ..."?? It's very misleading, because you link the name of these people and it actually links to their filmographies. Certainly does not belong here. Then we'll start adding featured award lists, and so on... It's not a biography, please... It ruins the list. ShahidTalk2me 12:57, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Specifically within the parameters of adding biographical material on the individuals from Wikipedia pages already rated as of a featured level of quality is appropriate for this subsection of the portal. Cirt (talk) 13:03, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I respectfully disagree. Not going to make even one edit more. Thanks for the RfC. Hope it turns for the better. :) ShahidTalk2me 13:18, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whether to highlight text from ledes of biographical filmographies of featured lists in Portal:Film/Selected biography 13:02, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Comment by Cirt

As the editor that brought this portal to featured portal quality and nominated it for featured portal consideration, I had initially set up the subsections Selected article and Selected biography of the portal to contain only featured-content quality material. I added Portal:Film/Selected biography/27 and Portal:Film/Selected biography/28 because the ledes of both contain mainly biographical material on the individuals which can be highlighted in the portal, and both are of featured-level quality pages.

These two pages were removed twice [4] and [5] by Shshshsh (talk · contribs).

Above, Erik (talk · contribs) agreed with my point that the ledes of the articles do have a majority of biographical information. [6] Cirt (talk) 13:02, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

@Shshshsh (talk · contribs) - Portal:Film/Selected biography/27 and Portal:Film/Selected biography/28 have bolded wikilinks emphasizing the nature of the pages they link to, while the name of the individual does indeed link to the correct page, so there is no confusion. Update

I have taken into account the comments below by Shshshsh (talk · contribs), Erik (talk · contribs), and Nehrams2020 (talk · contribs), who have all made some good points. I went ahead and self-reverted to the last version by User:Shshshsh, removing the two lists from Selected biography subsection page, and instead created a new subsection for the portal for Featured quality lists, Portal:Film/Selected list. If there are no objections, this Request for Comment can be closed. Thank you for your time, Cirt (talk) 04:44, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

With all due respect to Cirt, a great editor with whom I had a nice semi-collaboration in the past, I respectfully disagree. This "Selected biography" section, so beautifully formatted by Cirt himself, is intended to have featured biographies. The current pages on Portal:Film/Selected biography/27 and Portal:Film/Selected biography/28 are not biographies, these are filmography lists. Readers who see them expect to click on the name and eventually find a biography, not a filmography. It's very misleading, because these are apparently links to the name of these actors, but they actually links of their filmography pages. ShahidTalk2me 13:17, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comment by Erik

I have no strong feelings about the outcome, though I hope there is some sort of middle ground to reach. While I agree that there is a fair amount of biographical information in the lead sections of filmography articles, I am not sure if this makes them biographical articles. (After all, such information is interspersed across multiple articles in less concentrated forms!) However, it is worth noting that filmography articles are sub-articles of biographical articles. Actors and filmmakers' articles host filmography sections, and depending on the size of the article, the filmography can be spun off into a separate article. Since biographies and filmographies are pretty closely related, is it not possible to adjust the portal so we have a "Biographies and filmographies" type of heading? —Erik (talkcontrib) 14:09, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like an article that I worked on (Arnold Schwarzenegger filmography) is one of the articles being discussed here. Initially, I hadn't added the biography banner to the talk page because I didn't know if it qualified. Although it does cover biographical information on Schwarzenegger, I don't think it would be relevant to include it in the main selected biography panel. Perhaps a new section can be added to the portal featuring lists (especially since the project has over 30 of them). Currently, it appears the Arnold Schwarzenegger article will not be making FA anytime soon, but it is something to strive for if it should be added to the selected biography panel. I favor keeping the banner but only including the list in the portal in a new list panel. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 17:53, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The original two editors that started this whole discussion are now in agreement [7], so I will close this RfC. Thank you all for your input, Cirt (talk) 11:36, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
