Cleanup

[edit]

This could certainly use some cleanup. I'll look this over and see if I can make it flow better.--Wizardman 23:23, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Trims

[edit]

I trimmed some of the intros as they were way too long. When I archive them (in the next day or two) I'll archive the full versions. Quadzilla99 16:00, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done on two of them, selected article and selected biography. Quadzilla99 04:14, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DYK?

[edit]

The DYK? hooks are at least twice recommended length in each instance, see the main page or any featured portal. Quadzilla99 06:59, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See any portal listed here. I'll try to clean these up tomorrow. Quadzilla99 07:02, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Or just see the Main page. Quadzilla99 07:04, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the DYKs.--Wizardman 02:22, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They look great. Thanks. Quadzilla99 12:41, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting

[edit]

Basically I feel the article should follow the formats of other featured portals and should follow the guidelines of the main page sections. Also the portal was filled with run-on sentences which need to go. Quadzilla99 17:09, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think that <categorytree>American football</categorytree> would be a better option to use in the category section. Perhaps we could move the category tree to the right hand side and move the selected picture to the left side? --Pinkkeith (talk) 15:47, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I don't think that would work very well. It would take showcased content out of view and replace it with a long list that is more useful to editors than to readers. Selecting the most common/popular/important categories and displaying those is more useful. Also, on larger monitors, displaying a large list just creates a ton of whitespace. --B (talk) 17:14, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

selected biography

[edit]

why was rex grossman selected? his playing skills aside, he's not nearly as well-known as someone like manning, tomlinson, or any number of other high profile players. Deutschebag17 05:35, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I dont do much on wikipedia, but if i did, i would think its a great idea to select players that arent superstars. Maybe ppl will learn more about them. 76.106.203.88 (talk) 23:29, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion proposal for Coffin corner (football)

[edit]

Coffin corner (football) has been nominated for a merger into (American football). If other terminology like Squib kick, Fair catch, and even Fair catch kick have their own articles, I suggest Coffin corner (football) has its own article as well. Please vote to oppose the move on Coffin corner (football)'s talk page.

Equipment lists.

[edit]

We need an article discussing equipment used by positions.

Linesmen tend to be heavily armored, whereas place kickers wear next to nothing.

I would suggest that this information be incorporated into the American_football_positions article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.219.27.27 (talk) 15:06, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal on Naming Conventions

[edit]

Hello, all!

Please go here for a renewed discussion on relocated sports teams. Thanks! BigSteve (talk) 15:04, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Season articles

[edit]

I think it would be useful if you put the date of matches on the season articles - for example the giants one - it has the time of the match, but not the date. Yes I know the dates may be listed earlier in the article - but by weeks 15 - 17 you have to scroll up half the article to see them, so I think this would be a good idea to have the dates under the match headers as well. 188.221.79.22 (talk) 10:20, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is this portal dead?

[edit]

I think there are some changes which could be made to this portal, but don't want to step on anyone's toes. It does look like it hasn't been changed in a while, though, but I'll wait a few days before making changes. VictorianMutant (talk) 20:48, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to help out where you can. I tried to revive it a few months back, but after a few weeks of working on it, I lost energy for it. Its tough to do it all by yourself; I invited anyone I could think of who works on American football stuff, but no one seemed interested. If you'd like to continue where I left off, maybe we both could work on getting it back up and running. --Jayron32 03:12, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm gonna try to help out as well. Nolelover 20:31, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, so I got rid of the category box (which was empty anyway) and replaced it with a list box (i like lists) VictorianMutant (talk) 08:47, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Selected Terms

[edit]

Got rid of "On this day" section because it doesn't really work for a sports portal... there would be a third of the year with nothing happening(sure the NFL draft and college signing days happen in the spring, but aside from birthdays, there's not much). Replaced with "selected term. VictorianMutant (talk) 22:44, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Years in American football

[edit]

The category by year is sometimes in “Years in American sports” eg Category:2010 in American football (for 2001 to 2010) and sometimes in Years in sports” eg Category:2012 in American football (for 2011-12 & 2000-1999). It should be one or the other; or both - like Canadian football which is in say both 2010 in sports as a major sport and 2010 in Canada as happening there. But as there is a category for Years in American sports, American football should be in that. How about putting each “Year in American football” into both categories? Hugo999 (talk) 03:05, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In all major levels of American Football, the "regular season" occurs within one calandar year. In college football, ONLY a select number of bowl games occur in the following calandar year, so for historical reasons, the second year is not usually mentioned in the naming of the season. In the NFL, only the playoffs occur in the following year, so by convention the "year" assigned to the season is the year of the regular season (thus, Super Bowl XLV, though it will be played in February, 2011, is the championship of the 2010 season). This is not a convention unique to Wikipedia; if you look through ANY source on American Football, this is the standard convention. Wikipedia is not in the business of changing such conventions, it merely follows the existing conventions. --Jayron32 03:35, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Scratch that, I misunderstood the question. Each category should only be in the most specific category that applies to it; so the categories should probably all be in the parent category "Years in American Sports." --Jayron32 03:38, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Creation sub-WikiProject European League of Football

[edit]

Hey everyone,

the European League of Football is going into its third season and I was wondering, if it is the time to create its own WikiProject or Portal as part of the main American Football portal. Would you agree and do you have recommendations of starting this portal?

Kind thanks in advance.
