- 1992 - Hurricane Iniki (pictured) made landfall on the Hawaiian island of Kauai with winds of 225 km/h (140 mph). Iniki became the strongest and costliest hurricane to strike the state, causing $1.8 billion of damage.
- 2002 - Hurricane Gustav reaches its peak intensity as a Category 2 hurricane. Gustav was the first hurricane of that season, therefore becoming one of the latest first hurricanes to form. It was also the first storm to be named as a subtropical cyclone.
