• September 27th, 2006: German Ministers and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have criticised the decision of Deutsche Oper, the Berlin Opera house, to cancel its performance of Mozart's opera Idomeneo because of fears that scenes in it would offend Muslims. [1]
• September 25th, 2006 marks the 100th birthday of the 20th century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich was one of the most popular Soviet composers of his generation, despite his complex relationship with the Soviet government. He died on August 9, 1975. [2]
• September 7th, 2006: The Los Angeles Opera is planning to spend a $6m gift on staging its first production of Richard Wagner's epic Ring cycle. The four-opera production took Wagner 28 years to write, and takes several days to perform. [3]
• September 5th, 2006: Arctic Monkeys win the 2006 Nationwide Mercury Prize for their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. [4]
