- 1942 – John Alexander French wins a VC at Milne Bay, New Guinea
- 1943 – the Australian 9th Division lands at Lae, New Guinea
- 1939 – Formation of Second Australian Imperial Force and call for volunteers for service during World War II
- 1942 – World War II: the First Battle of Eora Creek – Templeton's Crossing ends as Australian forces continue to delay the Japanese advance south towards Port Moresby
- 1942 – World War II: the Battle of Mission Ridge – Brigade Hill commences as the Australian 21st Brigade joins the fighting on the Kokoda Track
- 1951 – Korean War: HMAS Anzac shells targets near Haeju, North Korea
- 1943 – A B-24 Liberator crashes at Port Moresby and kills 59 Australian infantrymen from the 2/33rd Battalion who were waiting to enplane
- 1965 – HMAS Mildura, launched 1941, was sold for scrap to Brisbane Non-Ferrous Pty Ltd.
- 1914 – The light cruiser HMAS Melbourne captures the German radio station in Nauru.
- 1942 – AM 41 Windsong I, an Australian Army ship, is lost at sea
- 1914 – Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force lands at Rabaul
- 1955 – 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment's advance party arrives in Penang, Malaya.
- 1943 – Richard Kelliher wins a VC in New Guinea during the advance on Lae from Nadzab
- 1947 – HMAS Warrnambool sinks after hitting a mine off Cairns; four sailors lost their lives
- 1914 – Australian Submarine AE1 is lost off New Guinea, becoming the Royal Australian Navy's first loss of World War I
- 1942 – World War II: the Battle of Ioribaiwa, the final delaying action fought by the Australians on the Kokoda Track, commences
- 1939 – the Australian Government announces the mobilisation of the Militia and the establishment of the Second Australian Imperial Force for service abroad during World War II
- 1942 – Japan's advance in the Owen Stanley Range is stopped at Ioribaiwa
- 1943 – Japanese troops abandon Lae, Papua New Guinea after heavy fighting following the Landing at Lae
- 2006 – HMAS Westralia (O 195) decommissioned and HMAS Sirius commissioned.
- 1918 – The 1st and 4th Divisions breach the Hindenburg Line during the Battle of the Hindenburg Line
- 1918 – Maurice Vincent Buckley wins a VC at Le Verguier, France, during the Allied Hundred Days Offensive
- 1918 – James Park Woods wins a VC at Le Verguier, France
- 1918 – the 5th Light Horse Brigade capture the town of Nablus
- 1918 – the Battle of Megiddo, part of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, begins and lasts for 3 days
- 1943 – the 2/6th Independent Company captures Kaiapit, New Guinea
- 1912 – Official formation of the Australian Flying Corps
- 1917 – Frederick Birks wins a VC at Glencourse Woods, near Ypres, during the Battle of the Menin Road Ridge
- 1944 – Academy award winning Australian cameraman Damien Parer killed while filming American troops on Peleliu
- 1914 – Reginald Roy Inwood wins a VC in Polygon Wood, Belgium
- 1917 – German New Guinea officially surrenders to the Australian forces
- 1918 – Australian and British airmen of the Australian Flying Corps and Royal Flying Corps massacre retreating Turkish troops in the Wadi Fara, Palestine during the Battle of Megiddo
- 1952 – ANZUS military representatives begin three day meeting at Pearl Harbor.
- 2006 – The first 18 of Australia's 59 new M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks arrive in Melbourne.
- 1940 – HMAS Australia begins action against Vichy French during the Battle of Dakar
- 1942 – General Thomas Blamey appointed Commander in Chief of Allied land forces in New Guinea
- 1942 – HMAS Voyager is grounded at Betano Bay, Timor while transporting troops to the island
- 1918 – No. 2 Squadron AFC shoots down 10 enemy aircraft during an action over Haubourin, in France
- 1918 – Anzac Mounted Division captured the city of Amman, Jordan during the Second Battle of Amman
- 1942 – HMAS Voyager is destroyed by demolition charges at Betano Bay, Timor, after grounding two days earlier
- 1917 – John James Dwyer wins a VC in Zonnebeke, Belgium, during the Battle of Polygon Wood
- 1943 – Members of Z Special Unit sink seven ships in Singapore during Operation Jaywick
- 1917 – Patrick Joseph Bugden wins a VC in Zonnebeke, Belgium, during the Battle of Polygon Wood
- 1950 – Korean War – 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment arrives in South Korea.
- 1918 – Hubert Wilkins was awarded a bar to the Military Cross for rallying United States troops during the Battle of the Hindenburg Line, while taking photographs. In doing so, he became the only Australian official photographer to be decorated for bravery in the field.
- 1918 – Blair Anderson Wark wins a VC at Bellicourt, France
- 1918 – Ernest Albert Corey wins a third bar to Military Medal, becoming the only person to be awarded the MM four times
- 1918 – John Ryan wins a VC at the Hindenberg Defences, France
