This is the archive for London Portal's selected article 2009

2009 Former nominations

Some bias here as I wrote large chunks of the current version, but I think it would be nice to have a showcase article about something that isn't the usual tour guide/history textbook material but reflects the ordinary lives of Londoners. Too many people's perception of the area is based on a single event over 20 years ago, and I think it would be nice to show a wider audience a bit of the more mundane side of Londoniridescent (talk to me!) 15:44, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

  • Support, a little bit different, and he didn't do half a bad job on it, either. Also, why not trawl through Category:Crime in London for something else out of the ordinary. Kbthompson 09:19, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
selected for April 2009 - see Portal:London/Showcase article/04 2009

A featured article on the development of part of our historic infrastructure. Kbthompson (talk) 18:21, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Strong support. I suggested Kbthompson nominate this one; I think it's possibly the single best-written London article on Wikipedia. – iridescent 15:22, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
    • A powerful argument, and gives us a quick selection for April Kbthompson (talk) 17:28, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
selected for May 2009 (Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea) - see Portal:London/Showcase article/05 2009

It pains me to suggest this… but actually a very good article. – iridescent 17:55, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

provisionally selected for June 2009

A turning point in the Wars of the Roses; fought in the London suburbs. Kbthompson (talk) 18:21, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Support; it's nice to remember than not all of the amorphous mass that is Greater London was always London, and that the long-subsumed towns had histories in their own right. – iridescent 15:22, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
selected for July 2009

I believe that this is a well referenced, informative article about the 2005 tube bombings. I think it has enough content, and each and every subject is detailed.--Wolf talk | हिन्दी | বাংলা 14:03, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Strong support for July, the 2nd anniversary of the bombings. Ham 09:18, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Support, this would make a rather nice showcase article, per Akut. Well referenced, informative, and quite interesting. --Mizu onna sango15/珊瑚15 20:21, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Support, this was an important event that happened in London and the World! Nr9krw 13:59, 21 Sept 2008 (UTC)
  • Support for the anniversary – iridescent 15:22, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
selected for August 2009

Just made it to GA. It'd be nice to showcase it, in particular since part of the Victorian market has been recently saved as a result of a public enquiry against the demolition plans backed by the City of London (Aug 7, 2008). BTW Is anyone still maintaining the portal? --DarTar (talk) 20:34, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

selected for September 2009

Just noticed this whilst going through assorted London-related articles checking if they were appropriately WPLondon/WPLT project tagged. This one had somehow managed to slip past our collective radar; a genuinely good article on an almost totally forgotten aspect of London's past. Strong support for this one, especially with this year being the 120th anniversary. – iridescent 19:41, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

selected for October 2009

One of the less well-known buildings in the South Kensington notable-buildings sprawl, and one of the definitive buildings of 1950s brutalism. – iridescent 17:55, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Support (by a frequent editor): good choice: notable yet often unnoted. Interesting fact is that this year it will be 50 years since the highly celebrated Foundation Stone Laying on 17 October 1959. The opening was nearly two years later, so I could be in the waiting list for the London Portal if we don't want to rush things :-). Wim van Dorst (talk) 21:51, 20 March 2009 (UTC).
    • Comment I feel an anniversary coming on .... I certainly support, as London is not just the big-tourist stuff ... Kbthompson (talk) 22:18, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
selected for December 2009

A north London estate, built in the late 19th century. Currently under review for FA status - it would be a good way to celebrate its promotion. Kbthompson (talk) 18:21, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Now promoted to FA - congrats Kbthompson (talk) 10:10, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
selected for January 2010

Noticed we're still looking for an "education" article – would this fit the bill? Well written, and something not many people know about London history. – iridescent 23:32, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
