- 1960 - The Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan becomes effective. To head off demonstrations, the ceremony for the exchange of the ratified treaties in Tokyo was not announced until one hour before it actually took place.
- 1961 - The United States, the Soviet Union and Japan are among twelve countries who sign the Antarctic Treaty.
- 1982 - Shinkansen service begins between Ōmiya and Morioka.
