- 1974 – the first March for Life, in Washington, D. C., attracts 20,000 people.
- 2009 – Michael Steele (pictured) is elected the first African-American chairman of the Republican National Committee.

- 1911 – Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States, is born.
- 1973 – The Heritage Foundation, which took a leading role in the conservative movement in the United States during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, is founded with Paul Weyrich (pictured) as its first president.

- 1871 – Otto von Bismarck becomes chancellor of the newly formed German Empire
- 1962 – Young Americans for Freedom sponsor a rally which draws 18,000 people and has been described as the "birthday of the conservative movement."

- 1960 – Barry Goldwater publishes The Conscience of a Conservative. The book reignited the American conservative movement and made Goldwater a star.
- 1948 – the period known as La Violencia begins with the assassination of Colombian Liberal Party leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán. For the next ten years Liberals, Communists and Conservatives would fight each other in the conflict.
- 1980 – the first Washington for Jesus rally is held in Washington, D.C. It will become part of the burgeoning Christian Right movement.

- 1979 – Margaret Thatcher becomes the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
- 1940 – the Norway Debate in the British House of Commons begins, and leads to the replacement of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain with Winston Churchill three days later.
- 1988 – Section 28 is enacted in Great Britain with the effect of prohibiting the promotion of homosexuality by local authorities.

- 1979 – in the United States, the Moral Majority is founded by Jerry Falwell and Paul Weyrich.
- 1983 – the United Kingdom general election was held on 9 June. It gave the Conservative Party under Margaret Thatcher the most decisive election victory since that of Labour in 1945.
- 1987 – in a reference to the Berlin Wall, US President Ronald Reagan challenges Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "Tear down this wall!"

- 1988 – presidential candidate George H. W. Bush utters the phrase, "Read my lips: no new taxes," during his acceptance speech of the Republican nomination. The phrase was used later by Bill Clinton to defeat Bush in the 1992 presidential election campaign.
- 2008 – Sarah Palin becomes the first female Republican Party nominee for Vice President of the United States.

- 1994 – the Contract with America is signed by Republican Party members on the steps of the United States Capitol.

- 1991 – Clarence Thomas is confirmed as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
