- 1802 – Explorer Matthew Flinders meets the French explorer Nicolas Baudin at Encounter Bay.
- 1817 – Australia's first bank, the Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac), is established.
- 1867 – Arthur Streeton, an artist and member of the famous Heidelberg School of Australian artists, is born in Mount Duneed, Victoria.
- 1930 – Brisbane City Hall is officially opened.
- 1933 – A secession referendum (voting card pictured) in Western Australia passes, with 68 per cent voting in favour of secession from the Commonwealth.
