- 1936 - Spanish Revolution: The Madrid Defence Council is established, appointing Ricardo Amor Nuño Pérez as Minister of War Industries and Mariano García Cascales as Minister of Information and Liaison.

- 1919 - Ukrainian War of Independence: The Revolutionary Insurgent Army kills 136 Mennonites in the Eichenfeld massacre.

1915 - Joe Hill, songwriter, itinerant laborer, and union organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World, is executed by the state of Utah after a controversial trial. His ashes were placed into 600 small envelopes, sent around the world, and released to the winds on May Day 1916.
