The St. Gallen Rhine Valley (German: St. Galler Rheintal) is a region in the Canton of St. Gallen, between Sargans and Altenrhein on Lake Constance, and is part of the Rhine Valley. The region of the St. Gallen Rhine Valley is bounded in the east by the Alpine Rhine, with two exceptions; the villages of Diepoldsau and Schmitter, which were cut off around 1900 by the Diepold Cut, part of the Rhine Regulation. The boundary from St. Margrethen follows the old river course, the Alter Rhein. To the west the valley is formed by the slopes of the Alvier Group, parts of the Churfirsten, the foothills of the Alpstein and the Appenzell Foreland.
