Phrike
Horror is a daimon appearing only in Seneca's Oedipus.[1] They are not personified elsewhere, but their presence in a list of other Greek daimones supports that their personification is taken from Ancient Greek sources.[2]
Etymology
[edit]Horror literally means shaking, trembling, and the feeling of horror.[3] This meaning is shared by the word φρίκη (phríkē),[4] which is used often in Ancient Greek tragedy.[2]
In popular culture
[edit]The PlayStation 5 game Returnal features Phrike as the first boss.[5]
