From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Perryman Cemetery is a cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma, located at 32nd and Utica, is Tulsa's oldest private cemetery, as well as Tulsa's oldest, continuously occupied tract of land. Around fifty people are buried there, and some unmarked graves.

History

[edit]

In 1849, Lewis Perryman, a prominent rancher and trader in the Creek Nation, built a log ranch in the southwestern corner of what is currently Zink Park (33rd and Rockford). He ran a cattle operation before the Civil War. Lewis fled to Kansas at the beginning of the war and died there in 1862. Afterwards, Lewis' son, George Perryman, returned to Tulsa to assume management of the family ranching operations.[1]

The earliest identified burial in the cemetery took place in 1879, although there was most likely earlier, larger burial ground before then.[2] In 1879, the ranch became the first post office in the area to be officially designated as "Tulsa".[3]

It was deeded to the Tulsa Historical Society in 1971.
