Production
[edit]Perempuan Pembawa Sial is the second horror film by director Fajar Nugros, produced by IDN Pictures and Susanti Dewi.[3] It was inspired by Javanese folklore about the curse of the Bahu Laweyan woman.[3] Bahu Laweyan is the nickname given to women who have a mark the size of a twenty-five rupiah coin on their left shoulder.[3] The word "laweyan" comes from the Javanese word "Selawe," which means 25, indicating that this myth has been around for a long time.[3] The original story varies, but people believe the mark is inhabited by a genie or devil, who will kill any man who has sex with the Bahu Laweyan woman.[3] Director Fajar Nugros said that in Perempuan Pembawa Sial', the audience will be presented with the occult of folklore with universal elements that exist in the horror genre.[3]
"Various rituals and forms of altars, Perempuan Pembawa Sial' will combine Javanese mysticism and occultism with various 'witch' ornaments found in fairy tales and legends that are already well-known," he said.[3] The film is an antithetical narrative to the fairy tale about stepsisters and happy endings.[3] This film raises the legend of “Bahu Laweyan” as a curse between two half-sisters, who are related by family but not by blood.[3] Head of IDN Pictures and Producer of Perempuan Pembawa Sial, Susanti Dewi added that in her latest horror film there is also a narrative about power abuse vs women empowerment through the two main female characters Mirah and Puti.[3]
“As a female producer who oversees this film project, I feel the need to bring a narrative about how the patriarchal order is still rooted in our lives and social judgment against women is still so attached.[3] Through the character of Mirah, the audience will see how she as a woman fights against the social order that is still unequal in positioning women in life including in the world of work,” said Susanti Dewi.[3]
In October 2023, the actors and actresses in Perempuan Pembawa Sial have been chosen and the filming process start outside Jakarta.[1]
On 29 July 2024, Ratu Sihir changed its title to Perempuan Pembawa Sial.[4] The title change was made after a long discussion with the related team in order to be more relatable to the public.[4] "So after finishing editing, we had a FGD, and the producer discussed and felt that they had found a title that was more fitting and relatable to the public," said Fajar Nugros.[4]
Fajar Nugros explained that Didik Nini Thowok was the first choice to star in the film Perempuan Pembawa Sial.[5] In addition to being a fan, he was sure that Thowok would be able to bring the character in his new film to life.[5]
“I told the casting director, I need Mas Didik.[5] If he’s not there, it won’t work.[5] He was contacted and said he was willing.[5] When I came, I just talked normally but he was very welcoming.[5] I said I was a fan.[5] He was friendly,” said Fajar Nugros.[5]
Filming Perempuan Pembawa Sial in Yogyakarta.[5] There are at least four crucial points for shooting, namely Godean, Moyudan, the coastline in the Gunung Kidul area, and Imogiri.[5]
"The 21-day filming in Yogyakarta includes Godean, Moyudan, and the beach in Gunung Kidul. One more, Imogiri because we are looking for a location for an onion plantation. There is a villa where the wedding will take place," said Nugros.[5]
Release and reception
[edit]Perempuan Pembawa Sial was released on 6 December 2024 at Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival.[6]
One of the things that makes Perempuan Pembawa Sial interesting is the presence of an adaptation of Indonesian folklore that is embedded in its plot.[6] The story of Bawang Merah Bawang Putih, which is familiar to the public, is a strong inspiration behind the conflict between the stepsisters in this film.[6] The similarity of the story elements of the film produced by IDN Pictures, not only evokes a sense of nostalgia, but also strengthens the dynamics of the intense conflict.[6] The plot built from this adaptation provides emotional depth to the characters, making the audience connect more deeply with every tension and moment presented.[6] In addition, the names of the siblings are similar to the figures in the Bawang Merah Bawang Putih folk tale, namely Mirah (red) and Puti (white).[6]
Perempuan Pembawa Sial stands firmly with its strong Javanese cultural roots.[6] From the story of Mirah with the "curse" of the laweyan shoulder to the unique traditions that steal attention, such as the ritual of blowing smoke on the bride and groom after being made up, all present their own uniqueness.[6]
Not to be missed, the sacred moment of marriage where the groom steps on an egg, adds an authentic touch that strengthens the traditional nuance in the storyline.[6] Of course, every cultural element presented by Fajar Nugros makes this film feel more alive and memorable because they are interconnected.[6]
Fajar Nugros cleverly inserts symbolism through bananas, shallots, and garlic in Perempuan Pembawa Sial.[6] Bananas that appear repeatedly in various scenes are not just background properties, but also hold hidden messages.[6] Likewise, shallots and garlic, which have implied meanings according to the context of the story.[6] This unique detail certainly should not be missed because it provides an additional layer of interpretation that makes this film even more interesting to explore through a touch of familiar folklore but wrapped in a fresh approach, Perempuan Pembawa Sial succeeds in presenting a story that is not only interesting, but also full of tension.[6] This adaptation enriches emotions and conflicts, keeping the audience captivated until the end.[6] With deep symbolism and strong Javanese culture, this film is a cinematic experience that is not only entertaining, but also invites reflection.[6]
