Panimur is a scenic destination in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, India.[1] It is most famous for the Panimur Waterfall, also known as Niagara of Northeast,[2] which forms from the Kopili River as it flows over rocky terrain, creating a wide, cascading waterfall that is a major attraction for tourists and photographers.[3]

Geography

[edit]

Located about 120 kilometers from Haflong, the district headquarters of Dima Hasao, Panimur features a hilly landscape as part of the Barail range.[4] This area has a unique climate and is rich in diverse flora and fauna. The Panimur Waterfall is formed as the Kopili River flows over rocky formations, creating a milky white cascade, especially during autumn when the water flow is at its peak.[5]

Tourism

[edit]

The place is a popular destination, especially in winter and spring, offering scenic views, sightseeing, and picnicking.[4] Visitors can also enjoy activities like mountain river crossing, waterfall rappelling, water rafting, and night trekking, making it ideal for both relaxation and adventure.[6]

The site holds cultural significance for the Dimasa tribe, who consider it as a pilgrimage site, 'Kopili Tirtha'. Every year, on Maghi Purnima, members of the tribe gather to take holy baths in the Kopili river since the rule of the Dimasa kingdom.[7]

After the holy bath, people worship Sibarai and offer prayers for societal peace and well-being in a mass prayer.[7]

Transportation

[edit]

The place is accessible via several routes, making it a convenient destination for travelers. The nearest major town is Haflong, situated approximately 120 kilometers away. From Haflong, visitors can reach Panimur by road via National Highway 627.

Lanka Railway Station, located in the Hojai district, serves as a vital and the nearest transportation hub for the place. It is approximately 38 kilometers from Panimur and offers connectivity to major cities in Assam. The nearby another railway station is New Haflong, from where travelers can hire private vehicles to reach Panimur.[8]

Public transportation options are limited. therefore, renting a car or bike is the only option for flexibility and ease of travel.
