On the Other Side
On the Other Side a novel by Rahman Abbas.
Rahman Abbas’s Khuda Ke Saaye Mein Aankh Micholi (2011),[1], translated into English by Riyaz Latif with the title On The Other Side (published by Penguin India) in June 2024. [2] [3] The novel is said to present the complexities of a liberal mind in an orthodox society. It also portrays the attention to the identity crisis of being a Muslim in India today. [4] Frontline review claims that On the Other Side is a tricky novel to read with a novel within a novel about a novelist, presenting itself as a work in progress...and, it poses these questions even as it sidesteps genre conventions through the device of a narrator who claims to be working on a “bulky novel” based on the diaries of his deceased protagonist, the novelist-teacher Abdus-Salam.[5]
