Odej Kao is a German computer scientist specializing in distributed operating systems, cloud computing, and big data analytics. He currently serves as a full professor at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), where he leads the Distributed Operating Systems research group.[2]
Education
[edit]Kao's academic journey began at TU Clausthal, where he earned a master's degree in computer science in 1995, followed by a Ph.D. in 1997, and completed his habilitation in 2002.[3]
Professional contributions
[edit]In 2002, he joined the University of Paderborn as an associate professor and director of the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing. In 2006, he transitioned to TU Berlin, focusing his research on cloud computing, resource management, quality of service, anomaly detection, and big data analytics.[3] Kao is now the chairman of the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF), an interdisciplinary initiative addressing aspects of digitalization. He also serves as the chief information officer (CIO) of TU Berlin and is a principal investigator in the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD).[4]
Kao has authored over 350 peer-reviewed papers.[5] His research interests encompass AI for IT operations (AIOps), cloud computing, distributed systems, and big data analytics with his publications being cited over 6,900 times.[5] Kao leads as chairman of the German Research Network (DFN) and is involved in national and international research initiatives.[6] Kao has been recognized for his exceptional contributions to computer science and academia with the DAAD Award for Exceptional Academic Achievement in 1995 granted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).[4]
Kao has served in conference chair positions including:
- General Co-chair of the 19th International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing (ICSOC 2021). This conference focuses on the latest advancements in service-oriented computing.[7]
- Organizer of the 3rd International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations (AIOPS 2023), held in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM 2023). This workshop centers on the application of AIOps.[8]
- Program Committee Member for the ICSE21 Workshop on Cloud Intelligence in conjunction with the 43rd International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE).[9]
- Program Committee Member for The MLSys'22 Workshop on Cloud Intelligence / AIOps in conjunction with the 5th Conference on Machine Learning and Systems (MLSys).[10]
- Program Committee member for the 6th International Workshop on Cloud Intelligence / AIOps (AIOps '25) co-located with ICSE '25.[11]
