New York heavy metal scene

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New York heavy metal scene thrived during the 1990s. Notable acts in the scene include Unsane, Life of Agony and Type-O Negative.

Ken McIntyre of Metal Hammer described the New York area as "a hotbed of freaks and weirdos" during the mid 1990s.[1] Unsane guitarist Chris Spencer claims his roommate was a performance artist who would pour cow's blood on himself. This gave the band the connections they needed to obtain the blood used on their album covers.[2] Spencer stated:

"We were like street vandals with cow’s blood instead of spray paint. A lot of these places you had to hit and run, because if the cops catch you throwing blood around, you’re fucked."[3]

He wrote that the "punishing noise rock" of New York area band Unsane "echoed the paranoia and angst" of the residents of a large city beset with overcrowding and street crime. [4]

Death metal

[edit]

The state of New York is also home to several highly influential death metal bands, including Suffocation,[5] Immolation,[6] Cannibal Corpse,[7] Incantation,[8] Malevolent Creation[9] and Mortician. [10]
