==Biography==
King was born in Cocoa Beach, Florida, on what was then Banana River Naval Station and today is [[Cape Canaveral]]. His father was a career naval officer, so his early life was lived in a series of "Navy towns" in Connecticut and California, and became the inspiration for his autobiographical short story "We Moved A Lot."<ref>Abbott, F. He graduated from Fermin Lasuen High School in San Pedro, California (where he was student body president) and later received an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the [[University of California, Berkeley]].<ref name="antiochla"/> He was awarded a B.A. in English from [[St. Mary's College of California]] <http://www.stmarys-ca.edu/>, where he was also class and student body president. He attended the [[Ecole de Musique]] in [[Nice, France]] and both the Institute for Educational Management (2002) and the Seminar for New Presidents (2007) at the [[Harvard Graduate School of Education]]. He is a licensed psychologist in California and was a practicing psychologist in Northern California for fourteen years.<ref name="antiochla"/>

The day he was to have taken the LSAT in preparation for law school, Neal decided instead that his calling was in education. He became a high school English teacher and counselor soon after completing his undergraduate study. As a young educator, King spent two years in the developing world in fulfillment of his alternative service requirement as a conscientious objector during the US war with Vietnam. He served as Director of the Lao American Association in Pakse, Laos and as Professeur d' Anglais at Lycee Amirouche in Tizi Ouzou, Algeria. King is a lifelong pacifist.

King served as a counselor at the American School in London (www.asl.org), from 1977-1980. Later, after completing his graduate education at UC Berkeley, King was a professor of psychology and the founding director of the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program at [[John F. King is President and a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the [[International Association of University Presidents]] (IAUP). He is also a member of a Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group for the [[United Nations Economic and Social Council|Economic and Social Council]] (ECOSOC) of the United Nations and a charter member of the Board of Directors of the World University Consortium, where he represents IAUP. Dr. King was a founding member of LGBTQ Presidents in Higher Education (www.lgbtqpresidents.org), served on the Executive Board of [[California Campus Compact]] and is on the Board of Directors of SONAD, an organization that promotes world peace and understanding across cultures through classical music. King has a background in the restaurant business as well, since the age of 16, having worked as dishwasher, waiter, bartender, manager and [[sous chef]] in a variety of restaurants, ranging from simple neighborhood fare to fine dining. He worked briefly as a waiter for Alice Waters at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, CA, during his years as a graduate student before then going to work for Jeremiah Tower at Santa Fe Bar and Grill in Berkeley and STARS restaurant in San Francisco.
