Mundlana also known as Mund rana or Mundlana Gurjar, is a significant village located in the Roorkee tehsil of Haridwar district in Uttarakhand, India. Located in the Garhwal division in the Sivalik Hills of the Himalayan range of northern India Mundlana Gurjar Kingdom of 1840 It was built by Pradhan Maharaj Singh Chauhan, his descendants still live in Mandlana.[1]

Mundlana is well-connected, with public and private bus services available within a short distance. The nearest major town, Roorkee, is only about 6 km (3.7 mi) away, providing residents with access to economic and educational opportunities

History

This village is inhabited by Dape Gurjar clan, which was settled by their leader Mund Rana about 500 years ago.The place was settled during the Gurjar immigration from the Ganges plains in 16th and 17th centuries.The Gurjars here were big landowners and had land revenue collection rights in the area of the banks of the Ganges granted to them by Mughal’s and later affirmed by Rohilla Kingdom .Gurjar's of Mundlana are extension of Chauhan (Dape) Gurjar present in Shamli Gurjar belt whose ancestors orignated from Ranthambore during the upheaval during Siege of Ranthambore in 1568.[5][6][7][8][1]

Rise of new name Mundlana

Mundlana is named after Mund Rana, the ancestor of Dape (Chauhan). Mund was the name of the king of Dape's and Rana was his title, which Chauhan Kalashyan, Dape used in their names.[9][10]

Culture

Mundlana village in Uttarakhand is culturally distinct, with a rich heritage rooted in the traditions of the Gurjar community. Central to the village's rituals is Devta Pujan, where local deities are worshipped in age-old ceremonies. The cultivation and ceremonial use of local tobacco also play a significant role in village customs. The Gurjar caste's pastoral history is reflected in their deep connection to livestock, particularly cattle. Unlike the neighboring Pahari regions, Mundlana’s traditions and language are more aligned with the Khari Boli-speaking plains, showcasing a unique blend of agricultural and spiritual practices.[6]

Agriculture

The villagers are engaged in agriculture, which has been their traditional occupation since ancient times, and they have been associated with land ownership (or feudalism).It is one of the prosperous village in the district due to its high intensive agriculture and availability of high quality land with bigger farm lot sizes.[11]

Language

The majority of the villagers in Mundlana communicate in Khari Boli as their native language, and also speak Hindi.[3]

Demography

Mundlana village’s total population is 7,626 and number of houses are 1,199. Female Population is 46.7%. Village literacy rate is 65.8% and the female literacy rate is 41.4%. Majority of population are Hindu Gurjar with a sizable Ranghar(Rajput) Muslim minority.[1]
