Monster[b] is an American biographical crime anthology television series created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix. Murphy and Brennan both serve as showrunners. The first season, The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, focuses on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer (Evan Peters), with all episodes released on Netflix on September 21, 2022. The series was initially conceived as a limited series, but was renewed for a second and third season in November 2022. In May 2023, the second season was announced to be titled The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, focusing on the murder case of the Menéndez brothers (Nicholas Chavez as Lyle Menéndez and Cooper Koch as Erik Menéndez), and all episodes were released on September 19, 2024. In September 2024, the third season was announced to be focusing on serial killer Ed Gein (Charlie Hunnam).

The first season received mixed reviews, but was ultimately a commercial success, reaching the number-one spot on Netflix in the first week of its release. The season became Netflix's second most-watched English-language series of all time within 28 days, and the third Netflix series to pass 1 billion hours viewed in 60 days. The first season received four nominations at the 80th Golden Globe Awards and six nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. Niecy Nash won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for the season.

Development

[edit]

In 2018, co-creator and co-showrunner Ryan Murphy signed a deal with Netflix for $300 million to create original television shows.[11][12] On October 2, 2020, a limited series focusing on the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was announced to have been greenlit from Murphy and co-creator Ian Brennan, titled Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.[13] To prepare for the role, Dahmer actor Evan Peters reportedly "stayed in ... character ... for months."[14]

On November 7, 2022, Netflix announced that the series had been renewed as an anthology series based on famous convicted killers who are "monstrous figures".[15][16] The series had a two-season order, and was renamed simply to Monster.[17] On May 1, 2023, Netflix announced that the second season would center on the murder case of the Menéndez brothers, and be titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.[18]

On September 16, 2024, it was announced that the third season of Monster will focus on serial killer Ed Gein. The season is scheduled to begin production in October 2024.[8][19][10]

Casting

[edit]

On October 2, 2020, Richard Jenkins was announced to be starring in the first season as Lionel Dahmer.[13] On March 31, 2021, Michael Learned, Peters, Penelope Ann Miller and Niecy Nash were all announced to be joining the series as Catherine Dahmer, Jeffrey Dahmer, Joyce Dahmer and Glenda Cleveland, respectively. Shaun J. Brown and Colin Ford were announced to have been cast in undisclosed roles.[20]

On June 29, 2023, Deadline reported that Cooper Koch and Nicholas Chavez were cast as Erik and Lyle Menéndez, respectively, for the second season.[21] On January 15, 2024, it was announced that Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny had joined the cast as José and Kitty, respectively.[22] That same day, Nathan Lane was cast as Dominick Dunne.[23] On February 1, 2024, Ari Graynor joined as Leslie Abramson.[24] Leslie Grossman was added that same month as Judalon Smyth.[25]

On September 16, 2024, it was announced that Charlie Hunnam had been cast as Gein for the third season. Gein had previously been portrayed by Shane Kerwin in the first season.[8][26][10]

Filming

Principal photography for the first season took place in Los Angeles, California, as well as in San Pedro and Altadena.[27][28]

Production for the second season was initially set for September 2023, but was postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WAG strikes.[29] Principal photography commenced in March 2024 and wrapped in July 2024, also in Los Angeles.[30]

Soundtrack

[edit]

The soundtrack for the first season was composed and performed by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. The soundtrack album was released the same day as the series.[31] Julia and Thomas Newman composed the soundtrack for the second season.[32] The official soundtrack album was released on various streaming platforms on September 13, 2024, prior to the release of the season.[33]

Release

[edit]

The first season, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, was released on September 21, 2022. The second season, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, was released on September 19, 2024.[34]

Reception

[edit]

Audience viewership

[edit]

The series rose to the number one spot on Netflix in the first week of its release for the first season.[35] In the second week of its release, Netflix announced that Dahmer was its ninth most popular English-language TV show of all time, with 56 million households having viewed all 10 episodes.[36][37][38] The season remained number-one for weeks and became Netflix's second most-viewed English Netflix series of all time, and the fourth highest across any language with 701.37 million hours viewed in 21 days.[39] In 60 days it became the third Netflix series to pass 1 billion views.[40] Dahmer debuted at number-one on the Nielsen Top 10 streaming chart by garnering more than 3.6 billion minutes of viewing for the week of September 19–25, placing it 10th on the all-time list for single-week viewership.[41] The following week, it jumped to No. 7 on the all-time list with 4.4 billion minutes viewed. The season topped Nielsen's streaming chart for the third consecutive week with 2.3 billion viewing minutes.[42]

Critical response

[edit]

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 57% approval rating for for the first season, with an average rating of 6.3/10, based on 30 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus says: "While Monster is seemingly self-aware of the peril in glorifying Jeffrey Dahmer, creator Ryan Murphy's salacious style nevertheless tilts this horror story into the realm of queasy exploitation."[43] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 46 out of 100 based on 9 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[44]

Controversies

[edit]

On September 23, 2022, Netflix removed the first season's "LGBTQ" tag after backlash on social media.[62][63] The season also received backlash from the families of Dahmer's victims, accusing Netflix of profiting off their traumatic experiences and "retraumatizing [the families] all over again".[64][65] Production assistant Kim Alsup alleged racial mistreatment while on set.[64]
