Mir Ershad Ali is a two-star admiral in Bangladesh Navy. He is currently serving as Commander of Chattogram Naval Area (COMCHIT). Prior to this appointment, he served as director general of the Bangladesh Coast Guard.[1] He also served as chairman of Mongla Port Authority and commander of Bangladesh Navy Fleet.[2][3]

Ali also served as director of naval intelligence (DNI) at Naval Headquarters.[4] He was elevated to the rear admiral rank from commodore on 25 January 2022.

Career

Ali joined Bangladesh Navy in January 1987 in executive branch.[5]

Ali served in the Naval Headquarters as Director of Naval Plans, Director of Personnel Services, Director of Naval Training, Director of Naval Operation, Director Multi-national Operations, Director Staff Duties and Ceremony and also as secretary of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS).[6] As commodore he commanded the western flotilla of Bangladesh Navy as the commander flotilla west (COMFLOT West). He also commanded BNS Bangabandhu.[7]

Ali was appointed chairman of Mongla Port Authority.[8]

In February 2024, Ali was appointed the 14th director general of Bangladesh Coast Guard.[9] He visited Tungipara to pay his respects at the mausoleum of former President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.[10] He distributed relief in Sylhet in August 2024 following massive flooding across Bangladesh.[11]

Ali hosted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Bangladesh Coast Guard Headquarters on the occasion of its 29th founding anniversary where she stated her goal to turn the Coast Guard into a three dimensional force.[12] Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government, Hoque was appointed director general of the Bangladesh Coast Guard in October 2024 replacing Ali.[13]

Ali married to Sharmin Chowdhury and has 2 sons.
