Shift clicking checkboxes

[edit]

{{editprotected}} Please add the information on how to select/unselect multiple checkboxes at once (using shift key). For details see Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Info_about_multiple_checkboxes. Reasoning:

  • the feature exists, we "pay" for it with our traffic, but very few people know about it
  • the info was available from the old system message MediaWiki:Watcheditlist

The exact wording could be: "Click on the other checkbox holding shift to select/deselect all checkboxes in between". Also could add the same notice to whatever message appears on Special:UndeleteAlex Smotrov 16:47, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How does "When checking or unchecking multiple titles, holding the shift key allows you to select consecutive checkboxes by clicking each end of the range to be checked." sound? I'm not sure that your addition is clear enough for someone who doesn't already understand the feature. Nihiltres(t.l) 22:52, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Umm… whatever version is better, English is not my native language, so I better not suggest anything specific. Maybe a better idea would be to make it a link "Selecting multiple checkboxes at once" pointing to a subpage here: Special:Prefixindex/Wikipedia:Tips/Alex Smotrov 23:07, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a great idea. I'll look into writing a tip, which can then be linked to from here. If anyone else noticing this thread has another idea, feel free to mention it - I'm watching this page. Nihiltres(t.l) 02:43, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the information directly on to the page for now. When you've written the tip page, add back {{editprotected}} so it can be linked from the message. Tra (Talk) 20:10, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I think shift would look better inside <code> though ∴ Alex Smotrov 20:27, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"remove all titles"

[edit]

While we're at it, would it be possible to get rid of "remove all titles" link without going through "proposal" and "discussion" steps? It's so obviously not needed there:

  • the same link "Clear watchlist" is right above this message (and we just clicked next to it to get to this edit page)
  • and "Clear watchlist" is now obsolete anyway (also it scares some users who don't know if there is a confirmation step)

I guess devs felt the same way, so "remove all titles" aka "Special:Watchlist/clear" is no longer present in MediaWiki, please remove this link from this message. P.S. I also think that the whole message could be better worded, it should say from the start that one can select several titles ∴ AlexSm 05:03, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

checkY Done - I removed the link, though I haven't otherwise reworded anything. Nihiltres{t.l} 13:11, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Highly controversial request

[edit]

{{editprotected}}

I request that the single quotation marks flanking Remove titles should be converted to double (" instead of ') for conformance with the Manual of Style. Single quotation marks should only be used within double, usually in quotations.

(I realise that it is not imperative to follow the Manual outside the mainspace, but I find that, if not the pages in the project namespace, at least the interface should adhere to it. Amongst other things, it sets a good example. :-)) Waltham, The Duke of 13:09, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I changed it, but like you said there's no imperative for cleaning up these sorts of things. — Carl (CBM · talk) 13:23, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changing wording

[edit]

I changed the wording to this (people do not normally realize that anything shown in italics is now a redirect). - Penwhale | dance in the air and follow his steps 03:26, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
