In July 2024, Timothée Chalamet came on board to star in Marty Supreme, a film directed by Josh Safdie, who wrote the script with Ronald Bronstein.[2] The film was inspired by professional table tennis player Marty Reisman, though "sources close to the production" called the story "a fictionalized original, rather than a biopic". Cast members were announced in the following months.[3] Chalamet revealed that Safdie encouraged him to do some of his own stunts in the movie.[4] The director also wanted Chalamet's eyes to look smaller, so he made him wear prescription glasses with contact lenses underneath, which he said "fucked up" his vision temporarily.[5] For the ping pong scenes Chalamet was coached by former players Diego Schaaf and Wei Wang.[6]

Principal photography began in New York City on September 23, 2024, according to On Location Vacations, with official set photos being released on September 30 of Chalamet in Manhattan.[7][8] Production wrapped on December 5.[9] According to Deadline Hollywood, the budget is $70 million, surpassing Civil War (2024; $50 million) as A24's most expensive film.[10]
