Lupa (ship)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lupa was an Ottoman galley ship, the flagship of Mustapha Basha, Commander of the Turkish Galleys of Rhodes.[1] It is notable for being the site of a slave revolt by its galley slaves in 1748.[2]

Slave uprisings[edit]

Hungarian, Georgian and Maltese slaves on board the ship Lupa revolted and sailed the ship to Malta taking over 150 Ottomans prisoner. The captured Mustapha converted to Christianity and remained in Malta. He and other Muslim slaves planned a revolt for 29 June 1749.[3] They were discovered and punished, however. Mustapha was returned to Rhodes thanks to French intercession.[2]
