Lidiya Sergeevna Maslova (Russian: Ли́дия Серге́евна Ма́слова; born July 9, 1971, Moscow) is a Russian journalist,[1] [2] film critic,[3] and columnist for Kommersant Publishing House (1998–2015). Since 2019, she has been a book columnist for Izvestia newspaper.[4]

Life

[edit]

She is a graduate of the Sociology Department of Moscow State University (1995).[5] Since 1995, she has been a junior research fellow at the Research Institute of Cinema Art (NIIK). From 1998 to 2015, she was an employee of the Kommersant, a correspondent and columnist for the Kommersant newspaper. She has published in the film magazines Iskusstvo Kino, Seans and Afisha.[3] Maslova is the author of articles for the encyclopedia The Modern History of Russian Cinema. 1986-2000 (2004).

In 1997, for publications in the newspaper Screen and Scene she was awarded the prize from the Russian Guild of Film Critics. Roman Volobuev repeatedly called Maslova "a favorite film critic and the smartest woman of her generation".[6] Over the years of working at Kommersant, she gained a reputation as one of the toughest and most independent film critics in the country. Andrei Plakhov, Maslova's colleague at Kommersant, pointed out that she is one of those film critics whose reviews are of interest to filmmakers, and noted that her reviews have often provoked a violent reaction from them. According to Plakhov, some directors demanded that the editor-in-chief of the Kommersant newspaper "almost physically destroy the critic Maslova".[7]
