Kraken Technologies is an energy technology platform developed by Octopus Energy Group. Launched in 2017, Kraken Technologies is designed to optimize energy generation, manage energy networks, and support field operations for utilities and other sectors.

History

[edit]

Octopus Energy launched Kraken Technologies in 2017.[2][3] The platform saw international adoption in 2018 when Hanwha Energy Retail Australia (Nectr) used Kraken for billing and customer relationship management (CRM) services as it entered the Australian market.[4][5][6]

Kraken Technologies operates on Amazon Web Services (AWS).[7][8] In 2019, Good Energy licensed Kraken to manage its 300,000 customers for an initial three-year term.[9] The following year, E.ON and its subsidiary Npower licensed Kraken to manage their combined customer base of 10 million.[10] E.ON later transitioned two million former Npower customers to the Kraken-powered E.ON Next platform.[11][12][13][14] In May 2020, Origin Energy acquired a 20% stake in Octopus Energy and obtained rights to use the Kraken platform in Australia.[15]

In 2021, EDF Energy awarded Kraken Technologies a contract to transition its five million customers to the Kraken platform, increasing the total number of energy accounts managed by Kraken to over 20 million globally.[16][17] By 2024, Kraken managed 54 million customer accounts worldwide.[18] Kraken also acquired the North American utility, Saint John Energy.[19][20][21]

Kraken Technologies reported revenues of £115.3 million in 2022 and managed 16.1 million accounts.[22] In 2023, Octopus Energy disclosed a £6.2 billion investment in Kraken Technologies.[11][23]

From 2022, the platform began to be used in the water supply and broadband/telecom sectors.[24][25][26][27]
