Kokondo Karate (Japanese: 古今道空手) and its sister discipline Jukido Jujitsu (柔気道柔術) are martial arts of Japanese origin developed by Paul Arel.[1] Jukido Jujitsu was created in 1959 followed by Kokondo Karate in 1970. Both styles are taught worldwide, but primarily in the United States. In America, the largest concentration of dojos is located in Connecticut, but dojos exist in eight states.[2] The International Kokondo Association (IKA) is the world governing body of Jukido Jujitsu & Kokondo Karate.[3]
Principles
[edit]The core principles of Kokondo Karate and Jukido Jujitsu are:
- Jushin: The center line. The horizontal and vertical center lines of the opponent's body are crucial to the execution of techniques. Containment techniques and attacks must be delivered on the center line.
- Kuzushi: Imbalance. Creating and controlling imbalances leads to the execution of effective techniques.
- Shorin-ji: Points and Circles. Neither straight line techniques (as in many Japanese styles) nor circular techniques (as in many Chinese styles), are ideal separately. Each has its strengths in combination and the result will be more effective.
