Klevisa Ymeri (born March 16, 1995) is an Albanian social media influencer and makeup artist, known for the content she posts to Instagram and TikTok.[2] She gained significant media attention in 2024, following her involvement in a car accident in Croatia which killed two people.[3]

Personal life

[edit]

2017 arrest and imprisonment

[edit]

In 2017, Klevisa Ymeri was arrested in France on charges of drug trafficking.[4] She was implicated in a cocaine trafficking network that operated between France and several other European countries. The network was believed to be linked to organized crime groups in Albania.[5] During the operation, French authorities seized significant quantities of cocaine and arrested multiple individuals, including Ymeri. She served a prison sentence and was released on probation.[6]

2022 fireworks incident

[edit]

On March 14, 2022, Ymeri and several friends fired fireworks near a high-security prison in Trento, Italy.[5] This act was intended to show support for a friend who was incarcerated there.[4] The incident was documented on social media and sparked controversy due to its disruptive nature and potential legal implications. Italian authorities briefly detained Ymeri and her companions but released them without charges.

2024 car accident

[edit]

On April 9, 2024, Ymeri was involved in a severe car accident on the D-8 road near Slano, Croatia.[7] She was driving a BMW SUV at high speed when she collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Stjepan Đerek, who was accompanied by his sister, Katarina Đerek.[8][9] Both Stjepan and Katarina died at the scene. Reports indicate that Ymeri was driving approximately 170 km/h[10] at the time of the accident, although the exact speed at the moment of impact was 90 km/h.[11][12]

Following the accident, Ymeri was taken into custody and later hospitalized for minor injuries. The Croatian authorities charged her with causing the accident due to reckless driving, leading to a month-long detention. A judge later allowed Ymeri to be released on bail set at 70,000 euros,[13][14][15][16] a decision that sparked public outrage and protests by the victims' family and residents.

The accident and subsequent legal decisions received widespread media coverage. The family of the victims, particularly their brother, Viktor Đerek, has been vocal in seeking justice, organizing protests, and calling for stricter legal consequences for Ymeri.[17][18]

"PRAVDA ZA KATU I STIPU" Protests

[edit]

In response to Ymeri's release on bail, the family of the victims organized a series of protests under the banner "PRAVDA ZA KATU I STIPU"[19][20] ("Justice for Kata and Stipe"). These protests saw significant public support, with hundreds of people gathering to demand stricter legal consequences for Ymeri and to raise awareness about road safety issues.[21] Viktor Đerek, the brother of the victims, was a prominent figure in these protests, calling for justice and highlighting the impact of the tragedy on their family.[22][23]

The protests were covered extensively by the media, drawing attention to the perceived leniency of the Croatian legal system in this case. Public pressure led to further scrutiny of the case, and the Croatian authorities faced calls to re-evaluate their handling of the incident.[12]

Influencer activity

[edit]

Before the accident, Ymeri had a substantial following on social media, where she frequently posted content related to fashion, travel, and beauty. However, following the accident and the negative publicity, her social media accounts were deactivated.[24]
