The Kiwi Clásico (Māori: Te Matarohia) is a local football derby in the A-League Men, Australia's top soccer league, between the two New Zealand-based clubs in the league: Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix.
Name
[edit]The derby is named after El Clásico, the rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain, one of the largest sporting rivalries in the world. The name was officially announced by the A-Leagues prior to the kickoff of the 2024–25 A-League Men season, the first season since Auckland FC were founded in 2024.[1]
Many fans suggested online that the rivalry be named Te Matarohia, which translates to "The Classic" in the indigenous Māori language, as this would be the literal translation of El Clásico. Indeed, it would also be inline with other countries where their largest football rivalry is a direct translation of El Clásico from Spanish into the local language, such as De Klassieker (Ajax and Feyenoord in the Netherlands, Der Klassiker (Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in Germany), Le Classique (Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille in France) and O Clássico (Benfica and Porto in Portugal).
